Mango Dal – Andhra Style Vegan Mango Dal recipe in the instant pot/pressure cooker. Toor Dal (Split Pigeon pea) cooked with Grated Raw mango and tempered with red dried chilies, ginger, garlic, green chilies, onion, curry leaves, cumin seeds and with basic spices.
This mango dal recipe is also called Mango Pappu or Mamidikiya Pappu in South India. Pappu means Lentils. Mango Dal recipe is an interesting combination of lentil and raw mango. Toor Dal and Mango is a magical combination. I would say they are a match made in heaven. This simple Dal recipe is my families favorite. It is refreshing and lip-smacking good! If you don’t have Toor dal on hand or don’t want to use toor dal in this recipe, you can substitute it with –
Split Moong Dal
Masoor dal/red lentil
The only change will be Cooking time. Red lentil and Split moong dal take less time to cook than the toor dal. I Please refer a note section in recipe card for timings. This Mango dal recipe can be served with Jeera rice or plain rice and it makes simple, hearty and scrumptious weeknight meal.
Tips to make Best Mango Dal | Mamidikaya Pappu in Pressure cooker/Instant Pot.
Don’t use young mango. Always choose mature raw mango. If you are making it in a traditional pressure cooker, cook toor dal with green chilies and mango pieces. It will bring out the flavors of mangoes very nicely. Make this dal little bit spicier side. Remove the skin of mangoes. Make sure the raw mangos are not too sour. If it is way too sour, reduce the mango quantity.

Instant Pot
Making this aam dal/mango dal in Instant Pot is the easiest method as you are cooking all the ingredients in one pot in just a few minutes. First, heat oil in an inner pot. Add cumin seeds, let it splutter. Then add ginger, garlic, green chilies, curry leaves, onion, tomatoes, and grated mangoes. Saute for a few seconds. Wash the Toor dal and add it to the pot. Add water, salt, chili powder, turmeric powder, and garam masala. Cover Instant pot with locking lid and cook it for 9 minutes under high pressure. Let the pressure release naturally. Open the lid, stir dal, take them in a serving bowl with some jeera rice, garnish it with some pieces of raw mango and Cilantro and ENJOY!!
Traditional Pressure cooker method.
In a traditional pressure cooker method, dal is cooked with Grated or diced mango and green chilies to bring out the most flavor from the raw mangos. Take Washed toor dal, mango pieces and green chilies in a big bowl(should fit in a traditional Indian Pressure cooker). Add water and cover the bowl. Add a glass of water in a pressure cooker, place a stand and place dal bowl on top. Cover the pressure cooker. Take 4 to 5 whistles. Let the pressure release naturally. Open the lid. Then prepare the tempering. Heat oil, add cumin seeds, curry leaves, garlic, ginger, green chilies, tomatoes, and onions. Saute for few seconds and add this tempering to the cooked dal mixture. Add some water, according to preferred consistency. Now add all the spices like salt, garam masala, turmeric powder, and chili powder. Cook dal for 3 to 4 minutes over medium to high heat.
Stovetop Method.
If you don’t have Instant Pot or traditional Indian pressure cooker, you can still enjoy this simple dal recipe by making it on the stove top. Take washed dal, mango and green chilies in a big pot, add enough water and cook them for about 20 to 25 minutes or until dal is tender, stirring occasionally. Make sure to check the water every now and then. Add some more water if needed. Once it is cooked perfectly, follow the tempering steps as shown in the traditional pressure cooker method.
