This is one of those treats that are perfect when you have unexpected guests or a serious chocolate craving. I love chocolate and I love all things crispy. So, these are my favorite treats. In fact, I love dipping these in my chocolate syrup. I know, for some that’s too much chocolate.
Ingredients and substitutes
Filo – I always use store-bought filo but you are free to experiment with fresh filo. Fresh filo is a bit harder to work with when layering but it’s still possible.Chocolate – I am using dark chocolate batons which is usually used for chocolate croissants but any crushed chocolate bar or chocolate chips work too.Melted butter – helps make the filo crisp as well as gives it that nice golden brown color when baked.
Step by step instructions
Preheat the oven at 190 C / 375 F.Cut each filo sheet into 4 (see video), 12 cigars.Work with one piece at a time keeping the others under a damp cloth to prevent drying out.Brush with melted butter.Place chocolate/chocolate chips .Fold the two sides over. Then, roll into a cylinder (see video).Brush with melted butter to seal the edges as you roll. This will keep them from opening up.Place on a baking tray.Brush each with more melted butter.Bake for about 10 to 20 minutes until lightly golden.Cool for at least 10 minutes before you serve. Caution – the chocolate inside the cigar will be hot.
