There are variations in making this Indian Sweet. Usually Maharashtra side, Puran Poli made with chana dal and Gujarat side it is made with Tur dal. Also, it is made with either Sugar Or Jaggary. This dish is very well known and prepared during the festival.

How to make Puran Poli?

Make dough

  1. Take flour in a bowl. Add oil. Mix it very well. Add water in it. Using your hands, mix to form a dough. Knead for about 5 minutes, or until the dough is smooth. Apply oil over the dough. Cover the dough with a damp kitchen towel and set aside for 15 minutes. To make Puran(filling)

  2. Wash the toor dal and pressure cook it for 3 – 4 whistles. Don’t add too much water while pressure cooking.

  3. In a nonstick pan, add boiled toor dal. Cook it for 10 minutes on medium heat.

  4. Add sugar and Saffron and cook the mixture until mixture thickens. It will take around 15 minutes on medium heat.

  5. Add cardamom powder and mix it very well.

  6. Let the mixture cools down.

  7. Apply ghee on the palm. Make equal lemon size balls.

Making Puran poli

  1. Roll out the piece of dough and place one portion of Puran mixture on rolled roti.

  2. Fold the edges. Seal the mixture by pinching the dough edges.

  3. Flatten the dough. Dust it with flour. Again roll it a little bit thicker than regular roti.

  4. Heat Tava on medium heat. Place rolled Puran Poli on Tava.

  5. Cook Puran Poli on Tava till it turns golden brown in color on both the side.

  6. Repeat the same process with remaining Puran Poli.

  7. Apply ghee on each Puran Poli and Serve hot with some extra ghee.
