You can make this Sattu Sharbat recipe at home. Let me guide you through the simple steps.

What is Sattu?

Sattu, a highly nutritious flour derived from powdered roasted chana (Bengal gram), is a staple in the northern regions of India, including Jharkhand, Bihar, and Uttar Pradesh. Often referred to as the ‘Poor Man’s Protein,’ sattu has recently gained recognition as a superfood due to its numerous health benefits. Packed with essential nutrients, it is rightly called an energy powerhouse, making it a perfect choice for health-conscious individuals. Chane ka sattu can be made at home, but it’s a time-consuming process. An easy way is to buy roasted chana, remove the skin, grind it to a fine powder, sieve it, and store it in a bottle. Sattu sharbat is a refreshing and healthy drink that can be prepared in sweet and savory variations. For the savory version, you can mix a few teaspoons of sattu with water and kala namak, bhuna jeera, green chili, onion, cilantro, and mint, aiding digestion. The best part about sattu sharbat is that it is free from harmful calories, artificial sweeteners, and preservatives, making it an economical and healthy choice. If you are looking for a wholesome and delicious drink that is rich in protein, fiber, and essential nutrients, sattu drink is definitely worth a try. You will be amazed by its incredible health benefits and delightful taste!

Ingredients required

Below is the ingredients list and possible substitutions. The exact ingredient amounts are in the printable recipe card at the bottom of this post.

Sattu – This is the hero ingredient of this drink. You can make sattu powder at home or buy it from an Indian store or online Lime Juice – It gives a lovely tang to this drink. Spices – I have incorporated black salt and roasted cumin powder in this drink for their unique cooling properties and the delightful flavor they add to the beverage. Small Green Chilli, cilantro and, Mint – This drink is extra refreshing with mint and cilantro. I enjoy a subtle spicy kick, so I included some green chilies. Feel free to omit the green chilies if you prefer. Onions—Add finely chopped onions to the Sattu for an extra burst of flavor and texture. It enhances the taste, and onions are also known to be beneficial during the summer, helping to prevent heat strokes. Chilled water and some ice cubes for serving.

Step-by-step process

Tips and notes

The flour settles down, so if serving the drink later, stir it and serve it fresh. Adjust the ingredients to your liking and enjoy a refreshing sattu ka namkeen sharbat this summer. Do not substitute besan for sattu. Gradually add water to the sattu while whisking continuously to prevent lumps and ensure a smooth, flavorful drink. Ensure that the sattu is fully dissolved in water before adding the rest of the ingredients. Use black salt for its excellent flavor and taste. It’s best not to substitute regular table salt for it unless you cannot find black salt. Adjust the quantities of the ingredients based on personal preferences and desired consistency. Use chilled water to prepare the drink. I enjoy this drink on the thicker side, but if you prefer a more watery consistency, add more water.
